After decades of wearing cotton or cotton / polyester briefs, I decided to check out the new products that I was seeing on the market. I tried boxer briefs from several brands - national brands that everyone knows as well as smaller brands that advertise on social media and use high-profile spokesmen.

I found that the polyester and micro-fiber polyester products are not comfortable - they don’t “breathe” and they chafe. Polyester is made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) - a synthetic material made from petroleum-based chemicals.

The products made of Modal fabric were much better. It’s stretchy but retains its shape. the seams are flat and barely noticeable, it breathes, and it dries quickly. Modal is made from beech tree pulp. Micro Modal, the product used by Krakatoa, is very smooth and silky. It stretches but returns to its shape. It may be the perfect material for underwear.

After testing a few products made from Modal, I was most comfortable in the Krakatoa Pinatubo Boxer Briefs. I ordered several more pair and I am very pleased with the product quality. I like the horizontal fly even though it’s not always as convenient as the traditional vertical fly. I have rarely had an issue with the legs riding up, the waistband does not roll over, and the fabric show no signs of pilling. The other products had one problem or another - the legs would frequently roll up, the waistband would roll over, or the quality was not as good even though the price was similar.
